Brazilian Jiu Jitsu offers children far more than just a physical workout. Here's what the research and experience show.
Mastering new skills builds genuine self-confidence. Children who train BJJ learn that they are capable — on the mat and off it.
BJJ requires focus, patience, and the willingness to fail and try again. These habits naturally carry over into school, homework, and daily life.
A child who knows they can handle themselves physically does not feel threatened. BJJ develops quiet confidence that reduces vulnerability to bullying.
BJJ is an excellent full-body workout that children genuinely enjoy. It builds strength, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular fitness without feeling like exercise.
Jiu jitsu is a thinking martial art — it's sometimes called "chess on the mat." Training regularly improves children's ability to concentrate and problem-solve.
You cannot train BJJ alone. Children develop communication, trust, and mutual respect with their training partners in a way few other activities provide.
For more on the research behind martial arts and children's development, see NHS physical activity guidelines for children.
As a parent, your child's safety is your priority — and ours too. Every aspect of the junior programme at Samurai Fitness has been designed with safeguarding and child welfare at the centre.
Our approach to child safeguarding follows guidance from the NSPCC's keeping children safe in sport framework.
Chris Last, father of two and local resident, fully understands the importance of child safety. Qualified in both Safeguarding and Martial Arts First Aid, Chris brings a level of professionalism, structure and genuine care to teaching that is rare to find.
His background as a former Royal Marine instilled him with an uncompromising commitment to duty, integrity and the development of others.
As a qualified Coach & Mentor, PT and Fitness Instructor, he understands how to teach children in a way that challenges them appropriately, builds confidence, and makes them genuinely want to come back each week.
His BJJ lineage – Brown Belt under the well-respected Chamberlain Brothers (Roger Gracie Academy Bristol) – means your child is learning authentic, technically sound jiu jitsu from an instructor with depth of knowledge to teach at all levels.
