Jiu Jitsu FAQ

Honest answers to the questions we get asked most often. If yours isn't here, just ask us directly.

Getting Started
None at all. The majority of people who start BJJ have zero martial arts background. Our classes are structured so that complete beginners can follow along from day one. You'll be paired with training partners at a similar level, and Coach Chris will give you the individual attention you need to learn safely and confidently. Read our beginner guide.
For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing — a t-shirt and shorts or joggers work well. No shoes on the mat. You do not need to buy a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform) before you start. Once you decide to train regularly, we'll advise you on when and what to buy.
You don't need to be fit to start — BJJ will get you fit. People of all fitness levels, body types, and ages train here. Coach Chris has trained students in their 40s, 50s, and beyond who had never exercised seriously before. Start where you are; your fitness will build naturally on the mat.
No. BJJ is one of the few martial arts that favours experience and technique over raw athleticism. Many practitioners start in their 30's, 40's or older and go on to become highly skilled. There is no upper age limit.
Yes. BJJ has one of the best safety records of any contact sport. The tap-out system means training can be stopped instantly at any time. At Samurai Fitness, all beginners are coached on safety before any live rolling. Rolling intensity is always appropriate to your experience level, and training partners are selected carefully for beginners.
Classes & Training
For beginners, two sessions per week is ideal. This gives your body time to recover between sessions while providing enough frequency to build muscle memory and retain what you're learning. As your fitness and experience develop, many students naturally increase to three or more sessions per week.
Every class follows a structured format: warm-up (10–15 min), technique instruction and drilling (40–50 min), positional drilling, and live rolling (sparring) for those who are ready (15–20 min). The whole session is approximately 90 minutes.
Yes, live rolling (sparring) is a regular part of classes — it's how you develop real BJJ skills. However, it is never mandatory, especially for beginners. There is no pressure to roll until you feel comfortable and ready. Most beginners observe rolling for the first few sessions before joining in.
Gi BJJ is trained wearing the traditional uniform (gi or kimono), which allows for grips on the jacket and trousers. No-gi BJJ is trained in shorts and a rashguard, with no cloth grips. Both have their merits. Our classes incorporate both, and as a beginner you'll naturally learn elements of each over time.
Juniors
Our Junior Programme is launching in Summer 2026. Full age details will be announced prior to registration — the expected range is approximately 10–15 years old. To register your interest in advance, please get in touch or visit the juniors page.
Yes. Children's BJJ is structured very differently from adults' training — the emphasis is on movement, coordination, confidence-building, and having fun. Coach Chris is a qualified coach and mentor with a strong understanding of appropriate training intensity for young practitioners. Safeguarding is taken seriously at Samurai Fitness.
BJJ builds confidence, discipline, focus, and resilience in children. It also provides an excellent physical workout and teaches children how to manage conflict and protect themselves without aggression. Many parents report improvements in school performance, behaviour, and self-esteem after their children start BJJ. Learn more about our junior programme.

Yes — that's exactly what the free trial is for. Your first class is completely free with no obligation to continue. We'd rather you come along, see what it's like, and make an informed decision than sign up without knowing whether it's for you.

About BJJ
On average, most dedicated students earn their blue belt after 1.5 to 3 years of consistent training (typically 2–3 sessions per week). The timeline varies significantly depending on individual factors. In BJJ, belts reflect genuine competence — they are not awarded on a fixed schedule. Read our full guide on the BJJ belt system.
BJJ focuses almost entirely on ground fighting — takedowns, positional control, and submissions (joint locks and chokes). Unlike striking arts (boxing, kickboxing, karate), BJJ does not involve punches or kicks. Unlike wrestling, it incorporates a rich submission game. It is widely considered one of the most practically effective martial arts for real-world self-defence, partly due to its live sparring culture.
Yes. BJJ is one of the most effective martial arts for self-defence, particularly because most real-world altercations end up on the ground. Knowing how to control a situation on the ground, escape bad positions, and apply submissions gives you a significant practical advantage. That said, Samurai Fitness teaches BJJ as a sport and art first — self-defence capability is a natural by-product.
