Directions

Getting here from Portishead

The usual route is the A369 and then down through the A370 corridor into Yatton, or out via the M5. Expect somewhere around twenty to twenty-five minutes depending on the time of day.

Portishead has grown fast without gaining much in the way of martial arts provision, and it still has no operational passenger railway station, so this is a drive.

There is free parking on site, so the journey ends cleanly rather than circling for a space.

Straight Answer

Is it worth the drive from Portishead?

Honestly — for one session a week, probably not, unless you specifically want what is here. For two sessions a week, most people who make the trip say it stops feeling like a journey after a month.

What brings Portishead members in is usually the coaching rather than the postcode: a Roger Gracie Academy brown belt, a former Royal Marine Commando of 24 years, and a room with no ego problem. That combination is not on every high street.

Come and try a Saturday first. If the drive is going to be a problem, you will know after one trip, and it will have cost you nothing.

Chris Last

Samurai Fitness is led by Chris Last — a former Royal Marine Commando with 24 years of service, and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt under the Chamberlain Brothers at the Roger Gracie Academy Bristol, where he remains part of the coaching team.

He has trained across the United States, Thailand and Brazil, and is a qualified PT, fitness instructor, coach and mentor. In practice that means classes are run properly: structured, safe, and with actual attention paid to whoever is newest in the room.

Common Questions

Training Here From Portishead

Around twenty to twenty-five minutes via the A369 and A370, depending on traffic and where in Portishead you start.
There are martial arts clubs nearer, but dedicated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction under a Roger Gracie Academy brown belt is a different proposition. Try a free class and judge it against whatever else you are considering.
You will progress, just more slowly — and that is a perfectly reasonable choice. Most people who travel further settle into a rhythm of one longer Saturday session. Call 07894 070925 and we'll be honest with you about what to expect.
