What to Expect

What to Wear

Comfortable athletic clothing for your first session — t-shirt and shorts or joggers. No shoes on the mat. A gi is not required to start.

What to Bring

Water bottle, a towel, and a positive attitude. Everything else you need will be provided or discussed at your first class.

The Class Structure

Every session starts with a warm-up, moves into technique drilling, and finishes with live rolling (sparring) for those who are ready.

The Culture

Ego is left at the door. Samurai Fitness is a welcoming, community-driven gym. Beginners and experienced practitioners train together with mutual respect.

Quick Answers

None at all. The majority of people who start BJJ have zero martial arts experience. Our classes are structured so that complete beginners can follow along from day one. You'll be paired with training partners at a similar level, and the coach will give you the individual attention you need to learn safely and quickly.
Yes. BJJ has one of the best safety records of any contact sport because the training partner can tap out at any time to signal they want to stop. At Samurai Fitness, all beginners receive clear instruction on how to tap safely, and rolling intensity is always appropriate to your experience level. Read our full FAQ for more on safety.
You don't need to be fit to start — BJJ will get you fit. Many people find that their fitness and strength improve naturally over the first few months of training. Come as you are. Coach Chris has trained people of all fitness levels, ages, and body types.
