Clevedon has plenty of gyms and no shortage of sea air, but if you want to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you are heading inland. Samurai Fitness is the closest BJJ academy to Clevedon — about ten minutes down the B3133.
The straightforward route is the B3133 through Kenn and Kingston Seymour, which drops you into Yatton from the north. It is a short, easy run — no motorway, no Bristol traffic, and it takes roughly ten to fifteen minutes depending on where in Clevedon you set off from.
Clevedon lost its railway branch line decades ago, so driving is the practical option. There is free parking on site, which matters on a Saturday morning when you are carrying a kit bag.
If you are coming from Clevedon seafront or Hill Road, allow a couple of extra minutes to get out onto the B3133.
Get DirectionsWe already have members who make the trip from Clevedon each week, and the pattern is fairly consistent: Saturday 10:30am suits people who want their training done before the day gets going, and Wednesday 7:30pm suits anyone who works in Bristol and would rather not add another town to the commute.
Clevedon is a town where a lot of people come to martial arts later — in their thirties, forties and beyond, often after years away from sport. That is squarely who this academy is built for. Nobody is going to make you feel like you turned up late to something.
Samurai Fitness is led by Chris Last — a former Royal Marine Commando with 24 years of service, and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt under the Chamberlain Brothers at the Roger Gracie Academy Bristol, where he remains part of the coaching team.
He has trained across the United States, Thailand and Brazil, and is a qualified PT, fitness instructor, coach and mentor. In practice that means classes are run properly: structured, safe, and with actual attention paid to whoever is newest in the room.
